Goblins apply a high amount of Constitution damage when attacking and will knock you out and take all of your gear. Rest easy though as they will hold onto your gear for some time before stashing it in a goblin treasure chest nearby, however such chests can be looted by other players even on PvE servers. They are known to sometimes knock out and leave other wild creatures attacking them that can be tamed.
You need to tame Goblins to craft Goblin Gizmos in their inventory as you cannot do it yourself.
